Track 9 from the album Radio Phnom Phen.
At its peak in the late 60’s/early 70’s, the Cambodians were a musical Superpower. Some of the most unique/exciting Pop and Rock songs this planet has ever produced came out of Phnom Penh’s studios during this period… most of the original master tapes survived. But the post-war Cambodian record companies have been ‘re-mixing’ the old classic songs, overdubbing druns and sometimes other instruments atop the original masters to maintain the younger generation’s interest in musical traditions… This ‘re-mix’ process is not unique in modern music productions, but the original masters have all but disappeared from the shelves of music shops in Phnom Penh, leaving only re-mixed versions for public consumption. FM radio stations in Phnom Penh play these re-mixed classics almost exclusively while the official AM station “National Radio of Cambodia” is the only consistent local source for the original recordings. This diverse, venerable collection of Radio Programming is a combination of AM/FM samples from the airwaves of Phnom Penh. The older, classic Pop/Rock FM cuts are ALL re-mixed as the newer forms/styles of Cambodian music collected here are not. All AM recordings are from the Original masters. This is Re-Mix Radio much of it re-mixed music, created by a re-mixed culture
